A similar fine knitting sheath with central wheel is illustrated in “Treen and other Wooden Bygones” by EH Pinto
Knitting sheaths were used to hold one needle and support the knitting, while the knitter knitted with the other needle. The sheath could be tucked into the waistband or tied around the waist.
