A wonderful carved slate chimney piece or mantle. The front is profusely decorated with geometric circles, roundels and is dated 1901 and initialled JH. The reverse is engraved: “This model was put up on the funeral of our glorious Queen Victoria February 4th, 1901 J. D. E. Hughes”

Similar pieces of carved slate from North Wales (circa1840) were exhibited in the British Folk Art exhibition at Tate Britain in 2014 and are illustrated in the accompanying book.
