Nant Gwrtheyrn
Tue. October 22, 2013
I’ve recently returned from a week of a Welsh language course at Nant Gwrtheyrn. Nant Gwrtheyrn is a centre for those like me, who want to improve or learn the Welsh language. It is a former quarrying village, largely abandoned in the 1970’s but has been transformed into a four star venue which also hosts weddings and conferences to help finance the important business of teaching the Welsh language. My course was lead by Pegi Talfryn, who is a slowly spoken (very useful when you aren’t catching every word) inspirational teacher. The course was wonderful and I learnt lots. Mid week we had a jolly into Caernarfon and visited Cae’r Gors the childhood home of one of Wales’s greatest writers Kate Roberts. I’ve just read Te yn y Grug (about the adventures of a little girl called Begw) in Welsh (with the help of the spoken version from the library) and have found her use of language simple yet beautiful. The centre is very much worth a visit…plus there is a pretty dresser with pinwheel inlay to the doors of the base. I tried to take a photo of them but they don’t show the inlay very well.
