Page 60: …Finishes on iron candle boxes were three kinds. Some were burnished, some were heavily coated with a semi-matt lead paint, on black, brown, or very occasionally a dark drab red. Japanning was another method of coating the iron, whilst sometimes the inner surfaces were tinned to retard corrosion…..
