A rare early 20th century spongeware dish with political motto to the centre & sponged shamrocks & crowns. ‘We Will Not Have Home Rule’

Pottery bowls & dishes with mottos date from the early 20th century and were produced in Scotland.

The dish probably dates from around 1912 – 1914. In Ireland the Third Home Rule Act was introduced in 1912 and ferociously opposed by the Ulster Unionists under the leadership of Edward Carson. Carson organised the anti-Home Rule movement of which this dish is a part, and the formation of the  Ulster Volunteers in the North of Ireland to prevent ‘the coercion of Ulster’. Subsequently the Irish Volunteers in the South who believed there should be ‘no concession for Ulster’.  Despite receiving Royal assent in September 1914, implementation of Home Rule was suspended due to the First World War and The Easter Rising in Dublin of 1916.
