An early 20th century Welsh hat.
Its an unusual example and it seems to be a ‘home-made’ hat rather than that from a milliner. It is made from cloth (possibly gaberdine) as an alternative to the usual silk plush or fur.
It’s inscribed in pencil on the inside ‘E Edmunds’.
It comes with a white lace bonnet.
10” high x 14” diameter of brim / 25.4cm high x 35.5cm diameter of brim
Circa 1920-30’s
£350 (hat & bonnet)
The plush examples made by professional milliners like Carver or Christies would probably have been quite a luxury for many and maybe home-made was a way achieving the look without the expense.
