Portmeirion
Mon. November 4, 2013
We have just returned from a stay at The Portmeirion Hotel with the children. We combined business with a bit of a holiday for the children during half term. The Portmeirion Hotel was wonderful. Our apartment, Villa Wynch, was decorated entirely in fresh and attractive Orla Kiely designs. We all loved Villa Wynch (Morwenna below has vowed to live in a bungalow with no old furniture) even though we usually prefer to be surrounded by antiques. I’ve been a bit sniffy in the past about Portmeirion believing it sat unnaturally against its surroundings and that it wasn’t very Welsh. I was wrong. Portmeirion, the creation of Clough Williams- Ellis is eccentric, joyful and very very Welsh. The language is spoken by most of the 150 staff not just to those guests with Welsh but also to each other. The staff were welcoming to us all and particularly kind and thoughtful to our children. Clough Williams-Ellis said “Cherish the past, adorn the present and construct for the future” perfectly put.
