Swede glorious swede
Tue. September 25, 2012
Having been fed the humble boiled swede since childhood, it has always been my least favourite vegetable. However, due to the need to provide some alternative veg with Sunday lunch for the family, I turned to this cheap, plentiful and nutritious vegetable. I wizzed it up with my hand wizzer and lots of butter and black pepper and I have to say, with the roast lamb it was simply delicious. I am now a complete convert and have been reading up alternative recipes in my Nigel Slater’s Tender – a cook and his vegetable patch. I’m a bit of a Nigel Slater fan and have quite a few of his books but this one is by far the most studied in my kitchen. It is full of very useful tips on which herbs, veg and flavours work together saving time and miserable suppers. One meal he suggests, which is a favourite with Mr Bowen, is mashed swede and faggots. The best faggots we have ever tasted come from David Richards butchers of Alexandra Rd, Gorseinon. Just the job for an autumnal evening supper.
