Two great films
Tue. December 2, 2014
I’ve been a fan of Mike Leigh’s films for many years and have seen most of them, (except Topsy-Turvy, don’t know why), but Mr Turner tops the lot. The film is a feast for the eye, heart and head. I loved the dialogue, the sets, the acting, the scenery; pretty much everything about it. I’d give Timothy Spall an Oscar just for being himself but as Mr Turner he is magnificent, as are the actress’s who play Hannah his housekeeper and his lover Mrs Booth. There are too many fine performances from the usual Mike Leigh players to mention. I urge you to see it and hope you agree with me.
As if one great film wasn’t enough, we took the children to see Paddington last night. It is a joy of a film and difficult not to fall in love with this delightful bear and station of the same name (actually I’ve always loved Paddington Station – gateway to Wales). It gave me a bit of a nostalga trip to my old London haunts like The Red Pepper in Formosa St, – I spotted the canopy whilst Paddington was flying above Maida Vale, Portobello Rd. I’m sure we will be watching this one for many years when it comes out on dvd.
